MEV, MAV, and MRV: The Volume Landmark Framework in Plain English

Sooner or later most lifters ask the volume question: how many sets does a muscle actually need in a week? The most popular answer of the last decade is a set of four landmarks with initialisms that sound like tax forms. The framework is useful, and it gets treated with far more precision than it has. This post covers both halves: what the landmarks mean, and how seriously to take the numbers.

The four landmarks, in plain English

The vocabulary comes from Renaissance Periodization, popularized by Mike Israetel, as a way for coaches to titrate weekly hard sets per muscle. A hard set here means a working set taken reasonably close to failure, roughly 0-4 reps in reserve; warm-ups do not count.

MV, maintenance volume: the least work that holds the muscle you already have. Useful during deloads, busy stretches, and anything else where the goal is keeping rather than building.

The intended use is a cycle: start a training block near MEV, add sets week to week through MAV territory while performance holds, bump against recoverable limits, then take a deload and start the next block a little higher than the last. That arc is the volume half of how a mesocycle works.

What the evidence actually supports

The direction is well supported: the dose-response research consistently finds more weekly hard sets producing more growth, on the order of a small additional gain per added set, with diminishing returns as totals climb (Schoenfeld and colleagues' 2017 meta-analysis is the classic anchor, and the 2025 Pelland meta-regression extends it across a much larger dataset). Two parts of the model are weaker than the vocabulary implies. The specific set counts attached to each landmark have never been validated; reviews that went looking (Baz-Valle 2021) found the numbers rest on coaching experience rather than measurement. And the growth-reversing ceiling a literal MRV implies has not shown up: across the studied range, the dose-response keeps rising with no clear plateau, let alone a reversal.

That leaves the framework as scaffolding: the best available way to reason about per-muscle volume, with the uncertainty living in the decimals rather than the direction. Use the landmarks to structure decisions, and let your own log supply the numbers the literature cannot.

Starter numbers you can actually use

Scaffolding still needs numbers to start from. These bands bracket the trained-lifter research target (12-20 weekly sets, the practical target the volume reviews converge on), deliberately starting lower so beginners and new blocks have room to add, and they sit inside the guardrails Anneal's own volume nudges enforce:

Two counting rules make the table work. Indirect work counts at half credit toward the assisting muscle: a heavy row adds about half a set to biceps, a press about half to triceps, which is why the small-muscle bands are totals rather than isolation-only counts. And everything counts per week: how you split the sets across days matters much less than the weekly total.

How to know you have crossed the line

Since nobody can hand you your MRV in advance, the practical skill is reading the signals that weekly volume has outrun recovery. In rough order of how much to trust them:

Rising effort at the same loads. The strongest signal. Weights that sat at 3 reps in reserve two weeks ago now finish at 1, without the load moving. Internal effort climbing while external output stands still is the classic fatigue signature, and it is exactly what a logged RIR column makes visible.

Falling performance. Reps or estimated 1RM sliding session to session at unchanged loads.

Grinding sets. Bar speed dying mid-set, rep quality collapsing at weights that recently moved cleanly.

Nagging joints. The soft signal: real, but the least specific of the four, since technique and exercise selection can produce it without any volume problem.

Volume and the deload cycle

The landmark framework and the deload cycle are two halves of one loop. Ramping volume through a block is what makes progress; the ramp is also what eventually pushes you toward recoverable limits; the deload is what resets the loop so the next block can start fresh. Skip the reset and the signals above stop being occasional and become the weather.
